Flood Alert Nigeria: 107 LGAs Across 29 States and FCT at Risk
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has sounded the alarm over imminent flooding in 107 Local Government Areas (LGAs) spanning 29 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This warning, based on the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO), is a call for urgent preparedness and action to safeguard lives and infrastructure.
Scope of the Alert: States and Communities in Danger
According to NiHSA, over 631 communities are vulnerable to flooding between September 1st and 15th. States under watch include Adamawa, Bayelsa, Benue, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, and many others. The risk levels range from moderate to very high, with threats of river overbanking, flash floods, and inundation in low-lying areas.
Causes Behind the Rising Flood Risk
The flood alert is driven by real-time hydrometric readings, satellite mapping, and river-stage forecasts. Heavy rainfall, poor drainage systems, and climate change-induced weather patterns are contributing to the increased likelihood of flooding. Urban expansion into floodplains has also exacerbated the situation.
Government and Community Response Measures
NiHSA has urged federal and state emergency agencies to activate contingency plans, deploy response teams, and pre-position relief materials. Local governments are advised to intensify public sensitization, identify evacuation routes, and prepare shelters for displaced residents.
What You Can Do: Safety Tips for Residents
Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to:
- Avoid walking or driving through flooded roads
- Move to higher ground when necessary
- Stay updated via official channels
- Prepare emergency kits and evacuation plans
NiHSA continues to monitor the hydrological situation and will provide timely updates. This alert is not just a warning—it’s a call to action for all stakeholders to prioritize safety and resilience.
