It was a night to forget for Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles as they suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Sudan in their final Group D clash of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

After a disappointing 1-0 loss to Senegal and a 1-1 draw with Congo in their earlier matches, Nigeria went into this fixture knowing only a win would keep their quarter-final hopes alive. But what unfolded at the Nyayo National Stadium left fans shocked and heartbroken.

From the very first whistle, Sudan dominated possession and showed more hunger. Two quick goals in the first half left Nigeria chasing shadows. Despite attempts to reorganize after the break, defensive errors and a lack of creativity in midfield allowed Sudan to add two more goals, sealing the emphatic 4-0 victory.

With this result, Sudan leapfrogged into the knockout stages, while Nigeria finished bottom of Group D with just one point from three matches. The defeat has sparked outrage among supporters, many of whom took to social media to question the team’s preparation, tactics, and overall commitment.

This loss also reopens the debate about Nigeria’s domestic league strength and how well home-based players are integrated into the national system. Critics argue that without stronger grassroots development and better training facilities, results like this will continue to haunt the Super Eagles at CHAN level.

While head coach Éric Chelle has promised a thorough review of the team’s performance, it is clear that rebuilding will take time. For now, Nigerian football fans are left to nurse the pain of another missed opportunity on the continental stage — and the haunting question: Nigerian 4:0… How did it happen?
