Nationwide SIM Services Disruption Expected During NIMC Platform Migration

SIM Services Nationwide to Be Affected by NIMC Platform Transition

As the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) prepares to upgrade its digital identity infrastructure, SIM services across Nigeria are expected to experience temporary SIM services disruptions. The planned migration of systems is designed to improve the efficiency and security of national identity verification—but it may come with short-term inconvenience for mobile subscribers in Nigeria.

ALTON disclosed this in a statement signed and released on Tuesday by its Chairman, Mr Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary, Mr Damian Udeh

Adebayo said the disruption follows a directive from the National Identity Management Commission to switch to a new identity verification platform.

He explained that the migration process has caused unforeseen technical challenges, affecting the availability of SIM services nationwide.

“The new platform aims to improve the integrity and efficiency of identity management systems.

“However, the transition has temporarily hindered Mobile Network Operators from offering seamless SIM-related services,” he said.

Why Is the NIMC Migrating Its Platform?

The NIMC is upgrading to a new, more secure identity management platform to enhance Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. The transition is part of a broader effort to strengthen national security, improve data accuracy, and ensure seamless integration with telecom and financial services in the country.

What SIM Services Will Be Affected?

During the migration, mobile users may face issues such as:

  • Delays in SIM card registration

  • Hiccups in SIM reactivation

  • Interruption in SIM swap and update services

  • Delays in linking NIN (National Identification Number) to SIM

Mobile operators have urged customers to plan ahead for any urgent SIM-related transactions.

How Long Will the Disruption Last?

While the NIMC has not given an exact timeline, early reports suggest the migration process may take several days. Service providers are expected to resume full operations as soon as the integration is complete and tested for stability.

How Should Mobile Users Prepare?

To minimize inconvenience, users are advised to:

  • Complete any urgent SIM-related updates beforehand

  • Download or back up digital identity documents

  • Be cautious of scams or phishing attempts pretending to offer fast-track solutions during the disruption

What Are the Long-Term Benefits of the New Platform?

Despite the short-term disruption, the new NIMC platform promises several long-term advantages:

  • Faster and more secure identity verification

  • Better integration with telecom and financial institutions

  • Enhanced user privacy and data protection

  • Streamlined access to government and digital services
